On Hawaii’s Mauna Loa lava flows, at the 3,300 ft elevation overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean,
we have created three Protea flower farms. Aloha Protea Farms is the “retirement project”
of two Alaskan educators, the husband and wife team of Dan Wegner and Dona Foster. Our first
100 Protea plants went into the ground in 1984, and we currently have nearly 4000 Protea plants of
over 50 varieties on our three farms. The Protea plants range in size from twelve inches to over
20 feet tall, with most being woody shrubs of 4 to 8 feet in height.
Protea History
The Protea (
PRO-tee-uh, or the
‘Hawaiianized’ version
PRO-tay-uh)
is one of the oldest of the flowering plants dating back over 300 million years. Most
Proteas originated in southern Africa and Australia. While there are over 1500 varieties
in the wild, only 20-30 make up the majority of commercially grown varieties. Protea comes
from the Greek god
Proteus who had the unique ability to change shape, a very appropriate
name for this incredible, extraordinarily diverse family of flowers. We would love to share some
of the unusual exotic beauty of the magnificent Protea blossoms that grow so well at our mountain farms.

Your flowers are shipped via
Federal Express with
individual water vials and
flower name tags on each stem. A

care and drying instructions is enclosed with each bouquet.
We prefer to ship early in the week so that the flowers are at their
destinations well before the weekend. We need your order at the latest by Friday or Saturday to
ship on Monday or Tuesday. Upgrade to rush the flowers to their destination a day sooner for
only $5 additional.
Remember,
Proteas don’t die . . . they dry,
and make for a lasting bouquet for years to come!
Protea Care & Drying Instructions:
Care:
Cut 1/2 to 1 inch from the stems and put your Proteas (pro-tee-uhs) in water immediately.
Add the enclosed packet of Floralife floral preservative to the vase water according
to directions. Fresh water solution every few days and recutting the stems will help ensure
their maximum freshness for approximately two weeks with most Protea varieties.
Choose a location away from direct sun and heat to enjoy the longest possible vase life for your
Protea bouquet. Proteas are THIRSTY flowers, so keep a close watch to make sure they have enough,
especially during the first two or three days. To revive Sunburst Pincushion type Proteas ONLY -
place the entire flower and stem into a sink of cool water for up to 30 minutes after unpacking
and cutting the stem.
Drying: Proteas don’t die, they dry!
Unlike most cut flowers, the exotic Proteas are not limited to use as fresh flowers. Most types
of Proteas dry beautifully for your lasting enjoyment in dried arrangements.
Simply take the Proteas out of the water and hang them upside down either individually
or in small bunches in a dark, dry area for two or three weeks. From experience, we have found
that richer shades of natural colors and well formed shapes result from the least amount of light and
dampness during the drying process.
